The most shocking moment of the experience was when I saw my reflection for the first time in nearly a week.
Â
A few days ago, my younger son Bradley and I wrapped a primitive survival father-son rite of passage experience.
Â
Deep in the northern Idaho wilderness, not far from the Canada border…
Â
We learned how to make fire with our hands…
Â
We learned how to forage for wild food…
Â
We learned how to build (and sleep in) a primitive shelter made with nothing but sticks, bark, and dirt.
Â
There was no cell service.
Â
No modern technology.
Â
And there wasn’t a single screen (or mirror, for that matter) the entire trip.
Â
When the week was finished…
Â
I walked back to the rental car parked at camp, and caught the reflection of my face for the first time in nearly a week.
Â
My forehead was greasy and blackened with ash. My beard had grown long and wiry. My hair had sprung with sweat curls. The strange face looking back at me was so primal that it took me a moment to recognize it was my own.
Â
As I write in Chapter 4 of Return to Real:
Â
“We are wild animals with claws and teeth.”
Â
And in that moment, I felt it.
* * *
Later that night, in our return back to civilization…
Â
We drove two hours to Spokane, WA and checked in to the Spring Hill Suites airport hotel. I don’t think I’d ever been more grateful for a soft bed and a warm shower in my entire life.
Â
And then, after a week without technology…
Â
I finally had the courage to DO it.
Â
To turn back on my phone.
Â
I was greeted with hundreds of unread emails. Dozens of unread texts. Facebook, LinkedIn, Instagram, Substack, Telegram, Signal & WhatsApp. All waiting to be urgently read and responded to.
Â
And just like that, I was sucked back in…
* * *
The next morning was brutal. 3:15am wake up call and a 17-hour travel day from Washington state back to Vermont.
Â
And the day after that?
Â
A 12-hour poultry processing marathon on the farm that we needed to rush home for.
Â
We processed 50 broiler chickens, 17 spent hens, 1 rooster, and 5 turkeys, the largest of which dressed out at a whopping 33 lbs. Our single biggest processing day ever.
Â
Suffice to say, it was a loooooong week.
Â
But then it got quiet.
Â
No more turkeys. No more broilers. And no more Henry, who as of this month, is now away at boarding school.
Â
The house just feels so empty without him here.
Â
The farm suddenly feels empty too.
Â
And I’ll be honest:
Â
The return has been hard.
* * *
In the middle of all this, late one night, I found myself listening to the entire 19 minutes of an Alan Watts lecture from 1959 titled “The Profound Shift Around the Age of 40.”
Â
Which seemed to let the algorithm know:
Â
Ding ding ding, we’ve got a live one here! Midlife existential crisis in aisle one!
Â
In these moments, my knee-jerk impulse is often to fill the emptiness with something… anything.
Â
Start another company.
Â
Write another book.
Â
At one point I even caught myself on the Harvard University Extension School website looking at going back to grad school.
Â
Masters in Psychology? Or Creative Writing? Hmm…
Â
Your heart knows that “fill it fast” isn’t the answer.
Â
But filling the emptiness helps you temporarily sidestep the deeper questions wanting to emerge:
Â
Is this what I was meant for?Â
Â
Is this the work I’m called to do?
Â
Is it enough?
* * *
Last week I wrote that the third and final part of every rite of passage is the return.
Â
What I didn’t mention is that it’s the hardest of the three steps.
Â
Because it drops you back into the exact life you left. Except you’re now carrying with you the burden of knowing you didn’t have before.
Â
Watts, in that lecture I mentioned above, described it back in 1959 in the following way:
Â
“[At a certain age], something shifts. And what shifts is this: you begin to see through the game. Not all at once, perhaps. Maybe it starts with small things. You stop caring quite so much about what your neighbors think. You find yourself less interested in impressing people. You notice that the things you once thought were so important, the title on your business card, the car in your driveway, the number in your bank account, start to feel rather hollow.
Â
And this is when the fear comes. Because if you are not your achievements, if you are not your possessions, if you are not your role in society, then who are you?
Â
This is the question that terrifies people. This is why so many people around this age buy sports cars, or have affairs, or make dramatic changes they later regret. They are running from the question. They are trying very hard not to see what is becoming obvious.
Â
But if you do not run, if you sit still and let the question be there, something remarkable happens. You begin to notice that beneath all the roles you have been playing, beneath all the masks you have been wearing, there is something else. Something that was there all along. Something that never changed, even though everything in your life changed.
Â
The Buddhists call this your true nature. The Hindus call it atma. I simply call it you. The REAL you.“
Â
And then, in the middle of all this, while questioning everything, I got this message on LinkedIn:
So maybe it is enough, after all.
Â
Which brings me to something I wanted to share with you…
* * *
