Ever read a book that was the exact right book at the exact right time for you?
For me, that book was The Second Mountain, by David Brooks.
Have you read it?
If you’re not familiar, here’s the ChatGPT 1-paragraph summary:
In “The Second Mountain: The Quest for a Moral Life,” David Brooks explores the journey toward a life of deeper meaning and fulfillment.
He contrasts two life paths: the first mountain, characterized by self-centered pursuits of success, career advancement, and personal happiness, and the second mountain, where individuals seek a life rooted in service, commitment, and community.
Brooks argues that true joy and purpose come from moving beyond self-interest to embrace relationships, moral commitments, and a dedication to the common good.
He shares personal anecdotes and stories of others who have embarked on this transformative journey, encouraging readers to find their own second mountain and live a life of greater depth and impact.”

I read the book a few years ago, when I was turning 40… When I was looking back on my first half of life, and reflecting on how I wanted to spend my second half of life…
Asking myself questions like:
What did I want my business to look like?
What did I want my life to look like?
What type of contribution did I want to make?
What experiences did I want to create with my family?
Earlier this week, on LinkedIn I talked about the concept of managing your “energy units” in lieu of trying to manage your time…
And at the end of the day… how you spend your time, said another way, is ultimately how you spend your life.
So my question for you is this:
In terms of your life:
Are you on your first mountain? Or your second mountain?
And if you’re *on* your second mountain…
OR… if you’re on the *quest* to find that second mountain…
OR… if you’re in the liminal space right now
OR… if you’ve been asking yourself… “What’s next?”
I’d love to hear from you to know where you’re at right now…
Send me a short reply.
Until next week,
Ryan :-)
Interested in joining my Strategic Advisory Group Mastermind?
(My virtual group that meets several times each month)
This group is by application and is currently full. Join the priority list to be notified as soon as the next spots are made available.
Thanks! You're on the Strategic Advisory Group Mastermind waitlist - I'll reach out when spots open up.
P.S. – Last week I floated the idea of possibly creating a high level group…
Perhaps a mastermind… or something similar…
And there is definitely some energy around that idea…
I’ve also been toying with the idea of possibly creating a way to get access to me (personally) in an advisory capacity…
To help with some of the things I’ve been lucky enough to help make happen in my own business…
- $100M+ in revenue generated…
- 7x Inc. 5000 Fastest-Growing Company…
- 2x #1 National Best-Selling Books…
- 49K+ Customers…
- 100% Bootstrapped…
As I’m thinking about my own Second Mountain, and how and where I spend (at least some of) my time…
This is something I’ve started to consider…
If getting access to me (personally) in an advisory capacity is something that might be potentially of interest to you…
Let me know…
This is something I haven’t done in over a decade.
No promises. But I’m taking an early temperature check on the idea…
Until next week!
